Goddards of Finchampstead


The "original" Goddards of Finchampstead were Nicholas Goddard and Patience Hopkins. They had many children, one of whom was Jeremiah. Nicholas had been a farmer, but Jeremiah became a carpenter.

Jeremiah married Mary Hopkins, and they had several children. Two of these were Jesse and George.

No photographs of Jesse and Mary are available, but there is one of their tombstone in Finchampstead churchyard.

George followed in his father's footsteps. Working at first as an agricultural labourer, he became a carpenter, and then a master carpenter. It is possible that the occasion for the photograph that we have was the production of the elaborately-carved piece on which he is posed.
