The Goddards and the Monnerys

George Goddard is the oldest of the Goddards of Finchampstead about whom much is known. Here is the best available picture of him, taken when he was (looking at the photograph) perhaps in his 40s. This would be about 1870.

George Goddard married Ann Goddard, who was Goddard before she married as well as after. They had eleven known children, all of whom reached adulthood.

The youngest of George and Ann's children was christened Arthur George. As a young man, he moved to London, and went to work for the Monnery family. From this time down to the present day, there have always been Goddards connected with Monnerys.

Another of George and Ann's children, Arthur, died relatively young - of pneumonia at the age of 28 - and in midsummer, too! - leaving a widow and three small children. His widow, Kate, remarried. Their only son, Owen, came to live with his Goddard grandparents.  Eventually, Owen became associated with Monnerys. He was an architect, and is remembered in his later years living at The Verge in Finchampstead, next to the schoolhouse.
